Our second Indonesian Art project is to draw a unique painting. We looked at two famous Indonesian artists, Gunarsa and Krijono. The paintings of the two artists are completely different, one uses thick lines with bright colours, the other one uses thin lines to draw, the colour is not as bright.
We had to draw something unique, and we're also supposed to use colours that's not realistic, for example, instead of painting a tree green and brown, we might use white on a black background. I drew part of a pond, with fallen leaves, a lotus, a fallen flower, and fish. The pond was supposed to be violet, but the colours I mixed were not good... the lotus is green, the leaves blue, the fishes red and orange, and the ground a light brown. I need to improve on mixing the same colour, because the violet I mixed were different everytime, making the painting weird...

Irian Jaya Shields
In Indo art, our first project was to design a Irian Jaya Shield. We looked at pictures of the shields made by the asmat tribe, and tried do design a shield like theirs.
Our shields had to be symmetrical, either horizontally or vertically. It also has to include at least one animal (that 'protects' the user from wounds). There has to be some patterns on the side of the shields for decoration. We can use only four colours: black, white, yellow and red.
On my shield, I drew two sea angels, but they turned out to be like dragonflies... I coloured the 'dragonflies' white. I also drew S shaped patterns around the shield, and two 'streames of water' on the sides, but they didn't look like water at all... My background is black, and I rarely used red.
When I was researching about the asthmat people, I found out that the Asthmat were one of the best at wood carving around the Pacific. Before Captain James Cook arrived, the Asthmat people were hunters and cannibals. Some European explorers bought the Asthmat shields and other artifacts back to Europe, where a lot of famous aritists took interest in them. Right now, some Asthmat people even recieve better education than people in Indonesia and even Europeans.
